The Franko Theater presents a large-scale production of MACBETH directed by Ivan Uryvskyi on the stage of Gdański Teatr Szekspirowski, Gdańsk – November 9.
The story of Macbeth is a journey from a noble knight to a ruthless usurper, from triumph to madness. The loss of humanity begins with a single victory, with one step beyond the moral boundary. Yet, just as in Shakespeare’s time, even today evil does not always have a face—it is dissolved in the information space, in manipulation, in hybrid wars.
In the Franko Theater’s contemporary interpretation of Macbeth, demonic forces take on new forms. The bearded witches who foretell power to the hero turn into all-seeing digital entities that, like the “Eye of Sauron,” ceaselessly observe, direct, and manipulate. In a world where reality is dissolved in a stream of disinformation and leaders balance between power and dictatorship, Macbeth once again resounds as a warning.
A hundred years ago, Les Kurbas presented at the Berezil Theater one of the first large-scale Ukrainian productions of Macbeth. At that time, the performance became an artistic exploration of the nature of political leadership and the consequences of unlimited power. Today, the Franko Theater continues this path.
How can society withstand the flood of information manipulation? How can one govern without becoming a tyrant? How can humanistic ideals be preserved in a world cracking under the pressure of war? Together with the audience, we will search for these answers.
