The Witch of Konotop
“The Witch of Konotop” is a theatrical production that resonated deeply in Ukraine and internationally. Premiered in Kyiv in 2023, during wartime, at the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre under the direction of Ivan Uryvsky, the play is based on a classic of Ukrainian literature.
The production blends Ukrainian folklore and mysticism with contemporary social and political themes, challenging stereotypes about witches and highlighting female strength and independence. It explores fears, superstitions, historical persecution, and the societal oppression of women.
Director Ivan Uryvsky’s innovative approach combines authentic traditions with modern theatrical techniques. Minimalist scenography emphasizes symbolic decor, while lighting, sound, and the actors’ presence create an immersive atmosphere.
“For me, the main theme is the choice between Light and Darkness. This story also reflects love, war, and broader issues like political and spiritual crises,” says Uryvsky. He connects themes of natural disasters in the play to global phenomena, urging reflection on humanity’s impact on the world.
The production’s powerful visuals and sound effects heighten its mystical atmosphere. While opinions vary—some praising its boldness and others critiquing its experimentalism—“The Witch of Konotop” is widely seen as a landmark in Ukrainian theater, blending past and present to create a unique cultural voice and engage audiences in rethinking traditional narratives.
